There are many unfortunate myths floating around as well, that some people (whom I can't help but think have a low IQ) will actually believe. If you had a scientist look at a pit bull, they would tell you that, gentically, they are NO different from any other dog. If they really had a locking jaw, for example, they would have to be classified as a seperate species.
Another bit of truth, is that they used to trained to play with the kids during the day, and fight at night. In old time dogfighting, competitors washed each others' dogs, so the dogs, during the height of their aggression, had to tolerate the hands of a stranger all over, without so much as flinching. The best dogs could go from one extreme to another like that, and, needless to say, only the best dogs were bred.
I can understand someone not liking the looks of a dog, but it isnt fair to anyone, including yourself to believe what everyone else tells you, just for the sake of ease or congruity.
But so many people do it anyway...

I was so outraged when my mother told me about a co-worker who "got rid" (aka had him killed) of her pit bull because it nipped her. (No strong bite, none of that junk. A nip.) She thought he was violent.
God, I love dogs. Why would someone DO that?!
